Lean Woman Blues

Now it's time to listen to the hidden sounds of Lean Woman Blues. As always, nothing has been added to the original recordings:

Get It On - multitrack

There are lots of multitrack songs popping up recently. Using a software like Audacity (free) you can listen to each track individually as if you were in the studio. I can't wait to listen to T. Rex multitracks, but they are not available yet.

So what I did was to get the DTS 5+1 surround version of "Get It On (Bang A Gong)", and by adding, subtracting, isolating center and sides, I managed to build a mogg file with quite good results. It's almost multitrack (with lots of leakages of course). This song is great, many layers, and fantastic mixing. So here it goes, my almost multitrack of Get It On, from the original by Marc Bolan and T. Rex. Please comment.

If you open it with Audacity, you can initially set the tracks as below:
1. rhythm guitar, bass, drums -> center
2. voice -> center
3. piano -> left
4. guitar, claps, tambourines, sax -> right
5. backing vocals, sax -> left
6. backing vocals, sax -> right
7. strings -> center

My personal comments after dissecting these recordings are:

1. Rhythm guitar, bass, drums: the T. Rex band as effective as always. It is rewarding to get to hear clearly to the raunchy rhythm guitars. No doubt about the chorus chords: you can clear hear the guitar goes: G Am E.

2. Voice track: the effortless, soft voice by Marc Bolan blends very succesfully with the instruments. It is double tracked, and he seems to be playing the guitar at the same time (listen to the speeding up towards the end). Contrary to prior songs by Bolan, the melody is very simple, but the song is very strong. Less is more here.

3. Piano: great surprise here. Played by Rick Wakeman, it is so low in the original mix, now you can hear it fully. Very strong during the chorus, and more creative towards the end.

4. Guitar, tambourines, saxes: The highlight for me is the guitar on the chorus. Mickey Finn's tambourines and claps are clearly heard. I believe there are no bongos in this song.

5 and 6. Backing vocals and Saxes: Flo and Eddie are great fun all over the track, especially towards the end. During a chorus (03:11) they miss the third repeat of Get It On, and afterwards they start an inexistent fourth repeat. A wild guess here, but both mistakes seem genuine to me. And what a great sax work here (by Ian McDonald).

7. Strings: lots of leakage here unfortunately. But I had to include this 3-note strings section because it was missing elsewhere.

I hope you have fun with this as I did. I exported the tracks to different MP3 files, and listened to each one several times, discovering unheard bits of music everywhere. My admiration
for Marc Bolan, T. Rex, and Tony Visconti increased even more.

Thanks for the visit and come soon for other mixes.
